Which SaaS Review Platforms Do AI Models Cite Most? (G2 vs Capterra vs TrustRadius)

Which SaaS Review Platforms Do AI Models Cite Most? (G2 vs Capterra vs TrustRadius)

We tracked 2,400+ citations across ChatGPT (Browse), Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews in response to SaaS buying queries. Review and comparison platforms collectively account for 31% of all citations — more than any single SaaS vendor’s own content. G2 is cited in 34% of all review-platform citations, making it the single most influential third-party source in AI-generated SaaS recommendations.

This matters for GEO strategy: being present on the right review platforms is not just a reputation tactic — it is a direct path to AI citation, since AI systems frequently cite review platform pages rather than vendor pages when making software recommendations.

Methodology

Total citations tracked: 2,412 unique citations Query set: 600 SaaS buying queries across 10 categories Platforms tested: ChatGPT (GPT-4o with Browse), Perplexity, Google AI Overviews Citation types tracked: Vendor pages, review platform pages, media/publication pages, community pages

We identified every URL cited in AI responses, categorized it by source type, and for review-platform citations, recorded the specific platform and the page type (category ranking page, product profile page, comparison page).

Overall Citation Source Distribution

Individual vendor pages28%675
Tech media / publications22%530
Community (Reddit, forums)11%265
Wikipedia / Wikidata5%121

The key insight: Review platforms are cited more than vendor pages. If you are only optimizing your own website for GEO, you are ignoring the channel that generates the most AI citations for SaaS software recommendations.

Platform-by-Platform Analysis

G2: The Dominant AI Citation Source

G2 accounts for 34% of all review platform citations — more than Capterra and TrustRadius combined. The pattern is consistent across all three AI platforms tested.

Why G2 dominates:

  1. Domain authority — G2’s domain rating is among the highest in the SaaS review space, making it highly retrievable by Perplexity and eligible for Google AI Overview candidate sets
  2. Category page structure — G2’s “Best [Category] Software” pages are citation-ready: they lead with a clear definition, use numbered rankings, include comparison tables, and are updated frequently
  3. Review volume signals — G2 has the highest aggregate review count of any SaaS review platform, which correlates with the training data presence AI systems draw on for recommendation framing
  4. Breadcrumb clarity — G2 URLs follow a consistent, semantic pattern (g2.com/categories/[category]) that AI systems can associate with authoritative category listings

Which G2 pages get cited most:

G2 page typeShare of G2 citations
Category ranking pages (“Best CRM Software”)61%
Product profile pages (individual tool pages)24%
Comparison pages (“HubSpot vs Salesforce”)11%
Blog/research content4%

Category ranking pages are the primary citation target — which means a tool’s position in G2’s category rankings directly affects its AI citation probability.

Capterra: Strong for SMB Queries

Capterra’s 21% citation share positions it as the clear second-most cited review platform. Its strength is in SMB-focused and small-business queries, where its positioning as a “find the right software for your business” platform aligns well with AI query framing.

Capterra vs G2 by query segment:

Query segmentG2 citation rateCapterra citation rate
Enterprise software41%14%
SMB software28%31%
Startup tools33%22%
Industry-specific (healthcare, legal, etc.)24%38%

Capterra outperforms G2 in industry-specific queries — particularly healthcare, legal, construction, and real estate software — where its vertical-specific category pages are more comprehensive.

Strategic implication: If your SaaS targets a specific industry vertical, Capterra optimization may be more impactful for GEO than G2 optimization.

TrustRadius: Underperforming Its Authority

TrustRadius’s 7% citation share underperforms its domain authority and review quality. The platform has deep, verified reviews with high average length and detail — but its citation rate is significantly lower than G2 and Capterra.

The primary reason: TrustRadius pages are less structurally optimized for AI extraction. Many category pages lead with navigation elements and filter UX rather than a direct category definition and ranked list. The AI-extractable content is buried deeper in the page structure.

This is not a permanent disadvantage — it is a structural issue that TrustRadius could address. But currently, a strong TrustRadius presence provides less direct GEO value than equivalent G2 presence.

Forbes Advisor: The Media Wildcard

Forbes Advisor’s 14% citation share is the most surprising finding in this dataset. As a media publication rather than a dedicated review platform, Forbes Advisor ranks third — ahead of TechRadar, TrustRadius, and every other pure-play review site.

The explanation: Forbes Advisor’s “Best X Software” articles are exceptionally well-structured for AI citation. They lead with a clear definition of the category, present a numbered ranking of top tools, include a comparison table, and have dedicated FAQ sections. They are, in effect, citation-ready content in article form.

The GEO lesson from Forbes Advisor: Structure matters more than platform category. A well-structured article on a media site can outperform a poorly-structured page on a dedicated review platform.

Platform Citation Rates by AI System

Review platformChatGPT (Browse)PerplexityGoogle AI Overviews
G229%38%36%
Capterra19%23%22%
Forbes Advisor17%12%14%
TechRadar8%10%9%
TrustRadius8%7%6%

Key divergence: Forbes Advisor is cited at 17% by ChatGPT Browse — significantly higher than its Perplexity rate (12%). This suggests Forbes Advisor content performs better in training data (ChatGPT’s knowledge base) than in live retrieval (Perplexity). Its authoritative media brand carries weight in model training even when its live-retrieval performance is lower.

What This Means for Your GEO Strategy

Priority 1: G2 Profile Optimization

Given G2’s 34% citation share, your G2 profile and category ranking position are more GEO-relevant than almost any other off-site action.

Specific actions:

  1. Collect reviews to improve ranking position in your G2 category — focus on reaching and maintaining the top 5 in your category
  2. Complete your G2 profile fully — products with complete profiles (logo, description, screenshots, pricing, integrations) rank higher and are more likely to be pulled in AI citations
  3. Respond to reviews — G2 profiles with active vendor responses signal legitimacy
  4. Request G2 category feature badges (“Leader,” “High Performer”) — these appear in G2 category pages that AI systems cite

Priority 2: Capterra for Vertical/SMB Focus

If your SaaS targets SMB buyers or a specific industry vertical, Capterra investment has higher GEO ROI than G2 for those specific segments.

Specific actions:

  1. Complete your Capterra profile with industry-specific keywords in the description
  2. Collect reviews from customers in your target industry — Capterra’s vertical filtering means industry-specific reviews improve your position in vertical category pages
  3. Submit for Capterra’s “Best Value” and “Most Recommended” badges — these appear on category pages AI systems cite

Getting listed in a Forbes Advisor or TechRadar “Best X Software” article is the third-highest-impact review-ecosystem GEO action — and it is achievable without buying advertising.

How to get listed:

  1. Identify the Forbes Advisor and TechRadar articles that rank for your target category queries
  2. Contact the editorial teams with a clear value proposition — what makes your tool worth including in their list
  3. Offer original data, case studies, or expert commentary in exchange for editorial consideration
  4. Ensure your product has a free trial — Forbes Advisor and TechRadar lists almost exclusively feature tools with a trial or free tier

Priority 4: Do Not Over-Invest in TrustRadius

TrustRadius’s 7% citation share does not justify the same investment level as G2 or Capterra for GEO purposes. Collect reviews there, but do not prioritize it over the platforms with higher direct citation rates.

  5. TrustRadius underperforms its authority at 7% due to structural page issues
  6. G2 category ranking pages drive 61% of G2 citations — your ranking position directly affects AI citation probability
  7. Perplexity cites review platforms at the highest rate (live retrieval); ChatGPT Browse follows; Google AI Overviews are similar to Perplexity

The one-sentence version: If you want AI systems to recommend your SaaS, getting into G2’s top 10 for your category is more impactful than almost any optimization you can make to your own website.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which review platform does ChatGPT cite most for SaaS recommendations?

G2 is the most cited review platform by ChatGPT (Browse mode) at 29% of review-platform citations, followed by Capterra at 19% and Forbes Advisor at 17%. G2's dominance reflects its high domain authority, structured category pages, and strong training data presence. Forbes Advisor's 17% ChatGPT rate (higher than its 12% Perplexity rate) suggests its media authority carries particular weight in ChatGPT's training-data-based recommendations.

Does G2 ranking affect AI recommendations?

Yes, significantly. G2 category ranking pages ('Best CRM Software', 'Best Project Management Tools') are cited in 61% of all G2 citations in our data. AI systems retrieve these pages when answering category queries and extract the ranked list directly. A tool ranked in the G2 top 5 for its category has substantially higher AI citation probability than a tool ranked in positions 11–20, even if both have comparable overall review counts.

Is TrustRadius useful for GEO?

TrustRadius provides lower direct GEO value than G2 or Capterra based on our citation data (7% vs 34% and 21% respectively). The primary reason is structural — TrustRadius category pages are less optimized for AI extraction than G2 pages. Collecting TrustRadius reviews is still worthwhile for reputation and training data presence, but it should not be prioritized over G2 or Capterra for direct GEO impact.

How do I get my SaaS listed in Forbes Advisor or TechRadar?

Forbes Advisor and TechRadar 'Best X Software' articles are editorial, not paid listings. To get listed: identify the specific article ranking for your category query, contact the editorial team with a clear value proposition, offer original data or expert commentary, and ensure your product has a free trial (these lists almost exclusively feature triallable products). Getting listed in one of these articles earns a 14% share of AI citations — comparable to being on Capterra.

How many G2 reviews do I need for GEO impact?

Based on our data: 50+ reviews is the minimum threshold for appearing in G2 category pages that AI systems cite; 200+ reviews is the competitive range for category top-10 positioning; 500+ reviews places you in the tier that dominates AI citations. The goal is reaching the top 5 in your G2 category, since AI systems extract from category ranking pages and the top 5 positions receive disproportionately more mentions.
